A 180 × 55 cm cape shawl in double-layer xiangyun sha — gambiered Canton gauze — woven at 26 momme from 100% mulberry silk and hand-stitched in Hangzhou. A frog button at the neckline holds the drape in place. Both sides present a distinct colour, so each wearing offers a different face.
DESIGN
The persimmon is one of China’s oldest auspicious motifs. Its name in Mandarin, 柿 (shì), sounds like the word for things — so persimmons in clusters carry the wish that all things go well. Here, ripe persimmons hang from slender branches across a warm terracotta ground, woven into the raised jacquard characteristic of xiangyun sha’s most refined expression.
The double-sided construction reveals a deep contrasting ground on the reverse. Neither side is a lining — both are finished with equal care. Together, they give this cape its particular depth and versatility.
THE CRAFT
Gambiered Canton gauze — 香云纱, xiangyun sha — is among the most laborious silk preparations in Chinese textile tradition. Artisans coat the silk with yam-plant sap, then bury it beneath river mud from the Pearl River delta. As a result, each piece carries a character the river itself has shaped. No two are identical.
Furthermore, this cape is woven at 26 momme — a substantial weight that gives the cloth body and presence without sacrificing drape. The floral jacquard is woven directly into the gambiered gauze, not printed onto it. Hand-stitching joins the double layers along every edge, producing a finish that is equally clean from both sides.
GUIDE
Fasten the frog button at the neckline and let the cape fall open over the shoulders. Alternatively, drape it without fastening for a looser, more relaxed silhouette. In either case, the double-sided design lets you choose which colour faces outward to suit the occasion.
- Ivory and cream dresses for formal occasions
- Black and deep charcoal for a composed, modern contrast
- Qipao and cheongsam for ceremonial wear
- Simple knitwear and tailored separates for daytime
