A 65 × 65 cm double-sided square scarf in 非遗花罗 — UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage floral luo gauze — carrying a botanical composition of roses and trailing branches in teal and blush pink across a pale steel-blue ground, with a warm ivory colourway on the reverse, across 100% mulberry silk. Hand-rolled edges. Slight variations of ±3 cm may occur due to the handcrafted nature of each piece.
DESIGN
远山景 — Distant Mountain Vista — takes its name from the quality of depth that characterises the great traditions of Chinese landscape painting. In those traditions, distance is not emptiness; it is atmosphere. The mountain recedes not because there is nothing there but because mist, light, and scale work together to suggest what lies beyond the frame. The composition on this scarf holds that same quality of recession and suggestion.
Roses and delicate trailing branches move across a pale steel-blue ground — the precise shade of sky above a distant ridge, early in the morning. The botanical elements are rendered with the controlled precision of classical flower-and-bird painting: each petal placed, each branch considered. Teal and blush pink sit together without asserting themselves; the palette is cool and clear. The reverse presents the same composition in warm ivory, so the scarf changes character entirely depending on which side is shown. Both colourways read differently in different light, and in turn differently against different grounds.
The luo gauze weave adds a further dimension. Because the warp threads twist around each other during weaving, the fabric carries a fine lattice of openings that catches light and creates a sense of translucency. The botanical print sits over this structure, so the flowers appear to emerge from within the cloth rather than lying on its surface.
THE CRAFT — 非遗花罗 Floral Luo Gauze
花罗 — floral luo gauze — is among the oldest silk weave traditions in China, traceable to the Shang dynasty some 5,600 years ago. It holds UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage recognition today. Close to thirty distinct production stages go into its making.
The technique of 绞经 — twisted warp — is what distinguishes it. Adjacent warp threads cross and twist around each other during weaving, creating a fine, stable lattice of openings across the cloth. The result breathes; it is light and cool against the skin, yet with body that plain gauze cannot offer. The double-sided printing process is applied so that each face of the scarf carries its own complete, fully realised colourway — steel blue on one side, warm ivory on the other — with the luo weave structure visible and active in both.
The edges are hand-rolled, the finest traditional finish for a silk scarf, producing a clean border that lies flat and does not crease in travel.
GUIDE
The 65 cm square ties at the neck, folds into a breast pocket, or fastens to a bag. The two colourways offer flexibility: the steel blue for spring and summer, the ivory reverse for autumn and winter, or simply for a different mood on the same day.
- White and ivory — the steel blue reads crisply; the ivory reverse blends warmly
- Navy and grey — tonal with the blue face, grounded with the ivory reverse
- Camel and warm neutrals — the blush pink connects naturally across both colourways
- A gift that offers two distinct presentations in a single piece
