THE CRAFT / Xiang Yun Sha — Gambiered Canton Gauze (香云纱)
Xiang Yun Sha — also known as Gambiered Canton Gauze — is one of the most labour-intensive silk fabrics in existence, and among the most prized in Chinese textile history.Unlike conventional printed or woven silk, authentic Xiang Yun Sha is produced through a process of natural plant dyeing using yam extract (薯莨), followed by repeated mud treatments and extended sun-drying on open riverbanks.The dyeing process alone involves fourteen distinct stages. A single length of white silk undergoes thirty rounds of yam-extract treatment, each followed by careful sun exposure, before the fabric achieves its characteristic depth of colour.The final sun-drying phase takes five to seven days on the riverside, during which the natural tannins in the yam interact with the riverbed mud to fix the colour permanently into the silk fibres.The result is a fabric of remarkable character: naturally breathable, temperature-regulating, and extraordinarily soft against the skin. Xiang Yun Sha grows more beautiful and supple with each wear, making it a true investment in craft.This scarf also features jacquard weaving — so the auspicious crane and peony motifs are woven directly into the fabric structure, not printed onto the surface.
