It is woven from authentic Xiang Yun Sha — one of the most labour-intensive and revered silk fabrics in Chinese textile history. Unlike any printed scarf, both faces carry entirely different colourways, making this effectively two scarves in one. Made in Hangzhou. Dimensions: 108 cm x 108 cm. DESIGN / About the Design
At the heart of each face, a single butterfly rests in a moment of absolute stillness. The butterfly is among the most enduring symbols in Chinese art, representing transformation, joy, and the fleeting beauty of the natural world.Face A carries the butterfly in burnished gold against a deep teal and ocean blue ground — bold, jewel-toned, and quietly dramatic. Face B, in turn, reveals the same butterfly in cerulean blue against deep crimson and berry red. The two faces share the same composition yet feel entirely different in mood. The result is a scarf that offers a new character with every wear.
THE CRAFT / Xiang Yun Sha — Gambiered Canton Gauze (香云纱)
Xiang Yun Sha — also known as Gambiered Canton Gauze — is among the most prized silk fabrics in Chinese textile history. Authentic Xiang Yun Sha is produced through natural plant dyeing using yam extract (薯莨), followed by repeated mud treatments and extended sun-drying on open riverbanks.The dyeing process involves fourteen distinct stages. A single length of white silk undergoes thirty rounds of treatment. Each round is followed by careful sun exposure, so the fabric gradually achieves its characteristic depth of colour.The final sun-drying phase takes five to seven days on the riverside. During this time, the natural tannins in the yam interact with the riverbed mud, fixing the colour permanently into the silk fibres. The result is a fabric that is naturally breathable, temperature-regulating, and extraordinarily soft against the skin.
