DESIGN / About the Design
Brocade Courtyard draws its inspiration from the contemplative beauty of classical Chinese garden architecture. Graceful pavilions rise above tranquil waters, connected by arching bridges that wind through groves of bamboo, plum blossom, and ancient pine. Birds glide among the branches while distant mountains fade into a luminous mist. The composition is rendered in a refined palette of soft blues, ivory whites, and warm earth tones, evoking the serene atmosphere of a scholar’s retreat where nature and architecture exist in perfect harmony. Every fold of this scarf reveals a new perspective, much like walking through a traditional garden where each turn offers a carefully framed view.
THE CRAFT / Flower Gauze Jacquard (花罗提花)
This scarf is created using the flower gauze jacquard technique, known in Chinese as Hua Luo Ti Hua, an ancient silk weaving method recognised as part of China’s intangible cultural heritage. Unlike conventional printed scarves, the pattern on this piece is woven directly into the fabric structure itself.
The technique works by twisting adjacent warp silk threads around each other during weaving, forming tiny, evenly distributed openings across the fabric surface. These micro-perforations give silk gauze its signature qualities: an exceptionally light and airy hand feel, natural breathability, and a subtle translucency that catches the light beautifully. Where the threads are twisted more tightly, the fabric becomes opaque, creating the architectural and botanical motifs. Where the twists are looser, the gauze becomes sheer, producing a delicate interplay of matte and luminous textures visible from both sides.
The production process involves nearly thirty individual steps, from the careful selection and pre-treatment of the finest mulberry silk threads, through to the intricate stages of thread picking, twisting, pattern drafting, and loom weaving. Each stage demands exceptional precision and years of specialist skill. The result is a fabric of remarkable refinement: lightweight yet structurally rich, with a depth of texture that printed silk simply cannot replicate. This is silk craft at its most accomplished, continuing a tradition that has defined Chinese textile artistry for centuries.
Why 19 Momme Matters
At 19 momme, this scarf uses a significantly heavier silk weight than standard scarves (typically 12-14 momme). The higher momme count means more silk per square metre, producing a fabric with noticeably superior drape, body, and durability. When combined with the gauze jacquard weave, the 19 momme weight creates a scarf that holds its shape elegantly over the shoulders while remaining supple and comfortable against the skin. It is an investment piece designed to last, growing softer and more beautiful with each wear.
GUIDE / Styling Tips
At 106cm, this piece transcends the role of a simple neckscarf. Its soft blue and ivory palette brings a calming, refined elegance to any ensemble. Drape it over both shoulders as a luxurious shawl with a tailored coat or evening dress. Fold it into a triangle and wear it as an oversized neckerchief with a cashmere jumper. Let it flow loosely over a linen blazer for a modern chinoiserie look.
The tranquil colour palette pairs beautifully with navy, cream, grey, and camel tones. Its generous size and structured jacquard drape make it a versatile statement piece that transitions seamlessly from day to evening, from boardroom to gallery opening.
