Summer Lotus draws from one of the most beloved subjects in classical Chinese painting — the lotus in full summer bloom. Large coral and orange blooms rise above broad green leaves, their petals luminous against the warm ground of the silk. A traditional ink wash landscape unfolds in the background, where a solitary boat drifts across still water beneath a hazy sky.The composition follows the classical Chinese principle of contrasting energy and stillness. The vivid blooms in the foreground carry warmth and abundance, while the misty landscape behind them suggests distance and contemplation. A warm rust-brown border frames the scene, grounding the composition with quiet authority. The result is a scarf that carries the full richness of a summer garden wherever it is worn.
THE CRAFT / Xiang Yun Sha — Gambiered Canton Gauze (香云纱)
Xiang Yun Sha — also known as Gambiered Canton Gauze — is among the most prized silk fabrics in Chinese textile history. Unlike conventional printed silk, authentic Xiang Yun Sha is produced through natural plant dyeing using yam extract (薯莨), followed by repeated mud treatments and extended sun-drying on open riverbanks.The dyeing process involves fourteen distinct stages. A single length of white silk undergoes thirty rounds of yam-extract treatment, each followed by careful sun exposure, so the fabric gradually achieves its characteristic depth of colour.The final sun-drying phase takes five to seven days on the riverside. During this time, the natural tannins in the yam interact with the riverbed mud, fixing the colour permanently into the silk fibres. The result is a fabric that is naturally breathable, temperature-regulating, and extraordinarily soft against the skin. Xiang Yun Sha also grows more beautiful and supple with each wear — a true investment in living craft.
