DESIGN

The lotus has held a singular place in Chinese culture for three thousand years. It rises from mud without stain, blooms above still water without effort. Classical poets and painters returned to it again and again: not because it was decorative, but because it expressed something true about beauty, purity, and the patience of still things. Here, the lotus is rendered in the manner of oil painting — broad, layered strokes in terracotta, burnt rose, teal, and warm cream, as though the flower has been caught mid-brushstroke. The title Lotus Listening to Rain — suggests the moment of stillness before the rain arrives, when water and air carry a particular quality of silence. The double-sided construction means the same composition is held differently on each face: pale and open on one side, warm and deep on the other. Both are equally present. Both are equally finished.

THE CRAFT Floral Luo Gauze

floral luo gauze — is among the oldest surviving silk weave traditions in China, traceable to the Shang and Warring States periods, approximately 5,600 years ago. It is recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. The technique involves nearly thirty distinct production stages. What distinguishes luo from other silk weaves is its structure. Adjacent warp threads are twisted around each other during weaving creating a lattice of small, regular openings across the cloth. So the fabric breathes. It is cool against the skin and light in the hand, yet the twisted structure gives it a stability and body that plain-woven gauze cannot match. The surface has a characteristic translucency: in certain light, it appears to glow. floral luo — adds a further layer of complexity. The openwork lattice is woven with figurative motifs — flowers, birds, landscapes — built into the structure of the cloth rather than printed onto it. In this scarf, a print is applied over the luo base, so the texture of the weave shows through the image in the manner of a canvas beneath oil paint. The result is a depth of surface that flat-woven printed silk cannot achieve. The edges are hand-rolled — a refined, traditional finish for a silk scarf — giving the border a fine, clean line that lies flat and travels well.
