A 180 × 52 cm cape shawl with a front face of genuine gambiered Canton gauze — xiangyun sha — hand-painted with orchids in the classical Chinese manner, and a reverse of 100% mulberry silk satin crêpe. Both layers are joined by hand. A frog button holds the neckline in place.
DESIGN
The orchid holds a singular place in Chinese culture. It is 花中君子 — the gentleman among flowers — prized not for flamboyance but for its quiet, enduring beauty. Classical poets wrote of the orchid growing alone in deep valleys, blooming without an audience, its fragrance carrying further for its restraint.
Here, slender stems rise across a deep black ground, carrying blooms in teal, soft violet, and a breath of amber. Each flower is applied entirely by hand — the artist works the pigment directly onto the gambiered gauze, so each stroke carries the particular pressure and movement of a single person. No two capes are identical. The reverse presents a ground of deep violet mulberry silk satin crêpe — a composed, luminous contrast that makes this cape genuinely reversible.
THE CRAFT
Gambiered Canton gauze — 香云纱, xiangyun sha — is among the most laborious silk preparations in Chinese textile tradition. Artisans coat the raw silk with yam-plant sap, then bury it beneath river mud from the Pearl River delta and sun-dry it repeatedly. The result is a silk of unusual depth and character.
Hand-painting onto gambiered gauze requires a different skill from painting on standard silk. The treated surface absorbs pigment differently, so the artist must work with sensitivity to the cloth. Each piece takes hours to complete. The orchid motifs are drawn by hand, brushstroke by brushstroke, on the finished fabric. The double-layer construction joins the gambiered front to the satin crêpe reverse by hand along every edge. The frog button is a traditional Chinese knotwork closure, hand-tied from a length of silk cord.
GUIDE
Fasten the frog button and let the cape fall over both shoulders — the orchid-painted face outward for a bold statement, or the violet satin reverse for a quieter, more formal look.
- Black, ivory, and cream dress or qipao for formal occasions
- Deep charcoal and midnight blue for evening
- White silk blouse and tailored trousers for daytime refinement
- A graduation or ceremonial gown — a gift that endures
Because each piece is hand-painted, yours will carry minor individual variations in the brushwork — this is not a flaw but the nature and value of the work.
